Domaine du Petit Clocher
Founded in 1920 by the Denis grandfather with 5 hectares, the property was taken on by his son in 1946, expanding the vineyard to 23 hectares. Maurice Denis undertook the modernisation in the 1950’s, constructing a modern wine cellar, the purchasing the first tractor in 1959…. It was in 1975 that Antoine and Jean-Noel decided to follow in the family tradition and created Domaine du Petit Clocher with their father. They understood very quickly that success comes by developing quality wines, closely monitored from vineyard to bottle. Since 2000, a fourth generation of winemakers has arrived at the company. Stephane, Julien and Vincent follow the family passion and are opening up new markets. Today the domaine cultivates 80 hectares of vines.
There are 80 hectares of vines are spread amongst 3 communes within a 6 kilometre radius of the domaine. The vineyard has an average age of 30 years. Has been long maintained by the family. More than half the area is made up of red varieties, (Cabernet Franc 30%, Cabernet Sauvignon 15%, Grolleau Noir 5% and Gamay 2%) and the rest are predominantly white varieties (Chardonnay 25%, Chenin 18%, Grolleau Gris 12%, Sauvignon Blanc 5%).
The techniques chosen by Domaine deu Petit Clocher are based on qualitative objectives reflected in :
- Meticulous soil maintenance, by grassing, ploughing or scarifying.
- The understanding of our soils and organic additions of mushroom compost, composted grape material.
- Balanced vineyard practise (treatment according to the climate, soil and vine).
- Yield control to ensure the best from our vines (40 – 50 hecolitres per hectare for red and white and 20 – 25 hectolitres per hectare for Coteaux du Layon).
- These practises bring to our cellars grapes that are both healthy and have great aromatic qualities, which will blossom in your glass.
